Park Hotel Amsterdam Kreukenhof Gardens

November 9th, 2011

According to the Eastman Kodak Co., the flowers and ornate concrete water fountains at Keukenhof in the Netherlands are the second most photographed place in the world, after the Taj Mahal. Keukenhof is just 11 miles southwest of Amsterdam, so you should definitely stop by during your time at the Park Hotel Amsterdam. If it is your first visit, feel forewarned that the beauty of the place might overcome you. It almost makes some visitors dizzy due to the incredible beauty in every direction, which is nearly too much for the eye to take in.

Keukenhof’s history is almost as colorful as its famous Dutch gardens. The Keukenhof originally belonged to Countess Jacoba van Beieren (1401-1436). Much of the grounds were also devoted to raising vegetables and herbs to feed the Countess van Beieren’s large and hungry court. (The name Keukenhof means “kitchen garden” in Dutch). There were no formal gardens with concrete water fountains during her time.

Little now remains of the Countess’s palace but a few brick walls. Tulips have replaced turnips, and herbs have given way to hyacinths, much to the delight of the million or so tourists who flock here each spring to what has become the world’s largest flower garden and the most photographed concrete water fountains since they are surrounded by dazzling color.

Since 1949, Dutch bulb growers have used this park to show off

Park Hotel Amsterdam Budget Travel

October 1st, 2011

Amsterdam is not the most expensive city in Europe, but it’s always good to know how to save a few dollars while you’re visiting the Park Hotel Amsterdam.

Luckily you don’t have to be an expert to travel for less. Anyone can do it just by following a few simple tips!

The first thing you need to know is how to get around town. Amsterdam is relatively small, so getting from place to place isn’t as difficult as you might expect. Start by visiting the VVV office across from Centraal Station when you arrive. Most people in Amsterdam speak English very well, so you don’t have to worry about communication problems. Staff here will assist you in finding the cheapest and quickest route to your destination.

Whenever you can, forget about paying for transportation and walk. This is not only free (the best deal you can get) but the best way to take in this beautiful city. You can use the free map from the VVV to find your way – just watch out for the many cyclists traveling through the streets.

In fact, cycling is yet another way to get around Amsterdam, just as the locals do. The city is made for cycling, but you have to keep in mind this doesn’t necessarily mean cycling around the city is a piece of cake. Cyclists move along at high speeds and follow special traffic signals, so having a good amount of previous experience on a bike will be helpful.

For traveling longer distances,

There’s no shortage of exciting things to see and do while you stay at the Park Hotel Amsterdam. Why not start at Hermitage museum? Located on the banks of Amsterdam’s Amstel River, this museum is the Dutch branch of the world-famous Hermitage in Saint Petersburg (Russia). The Hermitage Museum was patronized by Tsar Peter, who lived in Amsterdam for several years. During his time, visitors to the Museum enjoyed a free shot of vodka, a practice that is sadly no longer continued!

Not surprisingly, the Hermitage Amsterdam is a treasure trove of unique Russian history and culture. On display you’ll find a wealth of paintings, graphic works, sculptures and works of applied art, along with archaeological finds and numismatic material, mainly from the collection of the State Hermitage.  The Hermitage Amsterdam also has a special children’s section and holds regular workshops for the public to help spread appreciation for the arts and to stimulate creativity.
